Dear Colleagues,
As previously shared, on 26 August 2025 the UN General Assembly adopted by consensus the resolution A/RES/79/325 on the Terms of Reference and Modalities for the establishment and functioning of the Independent International Scientific Panel on Artificial Intelligence (Panel). The Panel serves as the first global scientific body on AI, bringing together leading experts to assess how AI is transforming our lives, providing independent, multidisciplinary scientific assessments of the opportunities, risks, and impacts of AI. International cooperation, the sharing of best practices and lessons learned, and how to facilitate open, transparent and inclusive discussions on AI governance will also be discussed.
The UN Secretary-General launched an Open Call for candidates to serve on the Panel in their personal capacity for a three-year term beginning in 2026.
The selected members will:
· Issue an annual report with scientific assessments of the opportunities, risks and impacts of AI, which will be presented at the AI Dialogue in Geneva in July 2026, and New York in May 2027;
· Prepare thematic briefs;
· Provide updates of its work up to twice a year to the General Assembly;
· Form working groups and consult informally with external experts as needed.
For additional information on the functioning of the Panel, please refer to the Terms of Reference and Modalities here.
