The Open Mobile Hub (OMH) provides a unified, open-source framework and common set of APIs that enable mobile app developers to easily switch between different service providers (like for maps, authentication, or cloud storage) and deploy their apps across fragmented mobile platforms, including both GMS and non-GMS Android, and iOS. This abstraction layer streamlines development, lowers costs, and increases user choice across various device ecosystems.
Here's the latest about the Open Mobile Hub project:
- Linux Foundation Research Report: A fresh report from the Linux Foundation Research team, “Expanding the Vision for the Mobile Industry,” interviewed over 20 subject matter experts (including from Google and Amazon). The report reveals that cross-platform development is overtaking the old model of native app development, but important gaps remain in support for more platforms and services, something the OMH project is working hard to solve.
- Collaboration with Google/Multipaz: OMH is now working closely with the Google team behind Multipaz as a lead contributor to the Multipaz developer program. Multipaz provides a unified API for digital identity. The OMH team recently joined forces with Google at the Global Digital Collaboration event in Geneva, delivering an engaging talk that explored the future of mobile development by discussing digital identity solutions with Multipaz and solving platform fragmentation with OMH. Here’s a video from that talk: https://youtu.be/FhXOSuaIiew?si=Ndv19OvlgHka_OoD
- Microsoft Collaboration on In-App Purchases (IAP): Microsoft has started to work with OMH to solve fragmentation related to in-app purchases (IAP). This collaboration is expected to deliver another OMH module, adding to existing modules that provide developer choice for Maps, Storage, and Auth. [Link to key contributor].
- Auto Industry Interest Group: Discussions have kicked off with the Auto industry, which is facing app fragmentation challenges similar to those in the mobile industry a decade ago. The first step is to form an Industry Interest Group, led by the Open Mobile Hub team, together with selected App developers, Platform Providers, Service Providers, and car OEMs.
